NHDC should not introduce evening and Sunday parking charges in Hitchin until they have fully consulted local residents and businesses.

North Herts District Council has set a timetable to introduce charges for evening and Sunday parking in Hitchin with no actual consultation with local people and businesses, just a two week notification given to the Town Centre Manager. This does not allow any consideration of the impact for a variety of residents, organized groups & clubs, churches, businesses and users, nor does it give them the opportunity to respond. It also does not allow any discussion to take place of how this will impact on the users and providers of services in the town centre.

This is undemocratic and flies in the face of Eric Pickles' (Secretary of State for Communities) announcement, made on August 30th, that any changes to parking arrangements should be open to local debate and petitioning (see

NHDC has given a date for comments until September 19th and stated that they propose to introduce the ‘tariff increases’ in November 2014.
