Cancel classes at NC State on Tuesday and have a mental wellness day to support UNC
While the tar heels may be our rivals on the field, the health of their student body is certainly important to each and every one of us as human beings. After hearing the devastating news of a student taking their own life on Sunday morning, Chapel Hill’s chancellor, Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz, decided to cancel class on Tuesday. He encouraged students to “rest and check in with each other during that day”. College campuses around the nation are in the midst of a mental health crisis, and the schools expect us students to just carry on after constantly hearing the news of suicides. This is simply not ok. NC State is only 30 minutes away from where this recent tragedy occurred. The least our school could do is give us a mental health day to stand in solidarity with UNC, and to give us a break. I think I speak for everyone when I say college is hard enough with all of the work, but the impact Covid has had on our experience is truly profound. Mental health should be a priority! On behalf of the NC State student body, I encourage Chancellor Woodson to cancel class and give us a mental wellness day on Tuesday, October 12th.
