Over the last few months, due to a feud between United Health Care, the anesthesiologist group Providence Anesthesia and the Novant Hospital Group has left many people in the Charlotte market with massive bills for receiving anesthesia without the knowledge that this service is 'out of network'.

Some insurance providers have provisions to help with issues like this but not at all.  A bill in NJ was created and signed into law in August of 2018 to protect consumers more from this.  All consumers must be given the knowledge upfront that a certain service is "out of network" and must sign that they are aware of this.

North Carolina needs to introduce similar legislation so there is less surprise coming out of these situations.  This was brought to the attention of many Charlotte area moms following this article by Charlotte Agenda which highlights a woman whose family was saddled with an $8000 bill following her epidural during routine child birth at Novant hospital.  Many women receive estimated costs for delivery prior between 20-25 weeks into their pregnancies and are not made aware that the anesthesiologists are "out of network" and therefore not part of their coverage.   There is enough stress surrounding medical events, especially child birth, but this is something that needs more clarity and protection.
