It's long past the time for NC to modernize it's dental laws

Our North Carolina dental laws are woefully out of date. It is having an impact on the dental hygienist industry.
First, North Carolina is one of only six states that does not allow a dental hygienist to perform local anesthesia. They are trained on how to do this and we should allow them to do so. This will make dentist office more efficient by enabling more patients to receive the care they need.
Secondly, dentists are capped on the number of dental hygienists that they can hire. They are forced to maintain a 2-1 ratio. There is no good reason for this rule. North Carolina has some great dental schools and we are training many new dental hygienists every year. However, since the amount of jobs is limited, their wages and benefits are going down. This also makes dental offices less efficient. The dentist are forced to maintain a two hygienists per one dentist ratio, which limits their care and capabilities. Most other states allow a higher hygienist to dentist ratio which not only enables more patients to get the care they deserve but also makes jobs easier to find for graduates of dental hygiene programs.
We must demand that our state General Assembly update these outdated laws.
