Charter School Update: State Board of Education final vote on June 5th

Northeast Wake Public Schools
Wake Forest, NC, United States

May 22, 2019 —

-On May 2nd the Charter School Advisory Board (CSAB) recommend 12 charter schools to open in North Carolina to the State Board of Education (SBOE) for final approval. 3 of the 12 schools are going to be located in Northeast Wake County and will be K-12.

-**The State Board of Education will have their final vote on these schools on June 5th, 2019**

-Northeast Wake County currently has 12 charter schools.  The entire rest of Wake County only has 15 charter schools total throughout it.  Northeast Wake County is very heavily saturated already with charter schools.

-Many Northeast Wake public schools are significantly under enrolled.  Even one charter school of this magnitude will be a huge detriment to our already under enrolled schools.

-One charter already owns land on Falcate Ave (behind Lowes hardware, near ABC store).  Another charter plans to build near the Wake Forest/Franklin County line.  These charter schools will be VERY close together and very close to many under enrolled schools.

-None of the current or proposed charter schools in Northeast Raleigh serve the economically disadvantaged students.  Our traditional public schools Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) average is 47%.  All of the the charter schools with the exception of one are at 0% FRL.  Wake Forest Charter is at 12%.  This has created a socioeconomic and racial segregation between the charter schools and traditional public schools.  According to their applications for approval, one of the charters does not plan to weight FRL at all and two of them only plan to weight to 15%.  This is significantly lower then the average in our area and proof that the addition of these charter schools will only further segregate our schools.

-Our public schools are being burdened with loss of funding due to under enrollment, while at the same time being burdened with an increasing percentage of Economically Disadvantaged and high needs students.
