North Carolina General Assembly: Vote NO on House Bill 956 and PREVENT Breed Discrimination Laws!
Breed discrimination targets pet owners across the board- both those who raise loving, family-oriented, trained dogs alongside the intended parties who misuse their dogs in cruelty and aggression. By making a breed discrimination law instead of creating and strengthening existing animal welfare laws, the government causes these breeds to be less adoptable, which often leads to them being euthanized quickly at animal shelters (sometimes without even a chance for adoption) and causes impounding of pets based only on their breed. This occupies legal resources, man-hours, and money which could be better spent securing our public health and safety through animal welfare, stray-animal care (and hopeful adoption), and clinics to educate the public on animal care. Breed discrimination laws lead to costly insurance premiums or denials as well as homeowners' association and landlords' rules changing, which can force pet owners to have to surrender loving family pets to their local shelter if they can't change their living situation. This is costly for animal control centers already overburdened by strays and the current influx of pets. Breed discrimination can lead to well-meaning citizens breaking the law to attempt to keep their family together, and hiding a pet, which is stressful for both the family and the pet, and can lead to more dangerous situations. There are many alternatives to breed discrimination, including dog licensing, community-subsidized obedience classes, and animal welfare courses. North Carolinian dogs and the people who love them deserve better than this, and we want the General Assembly to know!
Hi everyone, and THANK YOU!
Here is the link to House Bill 956, sponsored by Rep Rodney Moore and Rep Larry Pittman: http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/BillLookUp/BillLookUp.pl?Session=2013&BillID=h956
The breeds currently targeted are Pitbull, Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Mastiff, Chow [sic], Perro de Presa Canario, and wolf-hybrids. I urge you to sign even if you don't currently have one of these specific breeds in your home, as breed descriminatory legislation is often a slippery slope.
Tell our representatives that while we do support animal welfare and safety for our citizens, we do not support breed discrimination!
If you are a resident or voter in North Carolina, please take a moment to contact your representative directly. You can find their phone numbers and emails here: http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/members/memberList.pl?sChamber=House. Every signature on this petition sends an email to Reps. Moore and Pittman, as the bill's sponsors, and I will email all representatives at significant increments of both signatures and time so they know we, the voters, are paying attention and willing to take action!
For those in other states or jurisdictions, please feel free to add your name in support- governing bodies often look to each other's legislation for precedence, so by stopping North Carolina's bill we will be showing the world that our dogs have a political voice too- through us!
