83 years ago, on 1 September 1939, German troops commanded by the democratically elected chancellor of Germany, Adolf Hitler, invaded their peaceful neighbor, Poland, and thus despite pressure from European nations. This invasion marked the beginning of World War II which is now known as the most deadly conflict of the last centuries.

Today, we are facing a similar scenario as the democratically (?) elected president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, ordered the invasion of Ukraine and is likely planning on invading more countries that were once part of the USSR.

After World War II, the United Nations were created to prevent such conflicts from happening ever again. Today, the United Nations have proven themselves to be ineffective, in their current state, when it comes to peace keeping.

After leaving the USSR in 1991, Ukraine was left with one of the most powerful nuclear arsenal in the world. Although Ukraine ended up giving up on nuclear weapons in exchange for the guarantee that they would forever be protected from military invasions. This promise was undeniably unfulfilled since as of now, not a single country has provided military assistance to Ukraine.

Everyone is afraid of a total war with Russia, due to the possible use of weapons of mass destruction by Russia. If we go by that logic, then any country that has access to nuclear weaponry would be able to do whatever it wants by threatening to use such weapons if anyone does something they don't like, or gets its army involved. However despite our best efforts to not escalate this situation, recent history has shown that a major military conflict involving many large and powerful countries is now hardly avoidable.

Unfortunately, we will never be able to fully prevent any country from using nuclear weapons, but we can't just watch as Vladimir Putin sets eastern Europe ablaze.
We need to accept this risk and develop ways to defend ourselves against nuclear weapons, because otherwise we can't do anything but watch as hundreds of thousands of people are losing their homes, or even their lives and their loved ones.
In order for Ukraine and the rest of the world to escape the worst scenarios, we need to find a balance between action, and inaction. Currently, despite brutal economic sanctions and weapons and ammunition being provided to Ukraine, we're still leaning too much towards inaction as Ukraine's much smaller military forces will eventually be defeated by the much larger Russian forces.

Which is why I urge the members of the United Nations and of its Security Council, the members of NATO, and especially the members of the European Union, to cease any commercial relations with Russia, and to send their troops to Ukraine to reinforce the defending Ukrainian army that has shown that they were willing to fight for their country. This coordinated military intervention needs to have a strictly defending purpose in which combat between coalition forces and Russian forces would only happen if Russian troops kept on attacking Ukrainian targets.

You may find it naive for someone to make a petition for that, knowing that it would most likely have no impact. However, what else can we do as civilians except express our opinions to make things change ? We still have the ability to raise our voices and if it's the only thing we can do to make this world a better place, we should put all of our energy into it.
