Dear Administration of North Atlanta High School -

As a current North Atlanta Junior, I find that the current policy for exempting our exams is brutally unfair. Last year's policy was perfectly reasonable for every student. The 3 unexcused absences rule resulted in the student not being eligible to participate in exempting exams. However, this year, the policy has somehow changed to 3 EXCUSED absences, which results in students not being eligible to exempt their exams. Parents and students are outraged by this new rule.

Students deserve the right to protest against this injustice. Students who are religious have required holidays that are excused by the school, but somehow students still end up being penalized. Students who are interested in touring colleges are also excused - but still results further penalization. Students, like me, who get colds or sicknesses often, miss school frequently in order to heal the fastest way possible in order that we CAN attend school. It's either we miss school or come to school and spread the illness to more teachers and students instead. In fact, illness days eat away at my attendance more than any other absences. Other instances, such as required court dates, doctor appointments or a death in the family can also result in penalizing the student, preventing him/her from exempting their exams, even if the student has an "A" in the class.

As an IB student, exempting any exams that I can (I am currently enrolled in 2 non-IB classes and have the option to exempt my 6 IB exams second semester) is extremely important to me. Being forced to take 8 exams because of my attendance, despite my good grades, is nothing short of stressful. Having an "A" in the class and going into an exam - especially 8 of them - is an overly stressful process and also can affect the grade itself to lower.

Students at North Atlanta High School understand that the goal for the school itself is to help and encourage students to attend as much school as possible in order to help educate their students to the best of their ability. North Atlanta High School's faculty and staff want to see their students succeed. If this is the case, then why make us suffer?

School is a priority, but mental and physical health must come first. Finding a future college comes first. Family emergencies come first. Religion comes first. Not our attendance, and therefore, the policy for school attendance is brutally unfair to the students at our school. We, as a whole, hereby petition to change the exemption policy back to the way it was last year.

Thank you.

Onward, Warriors!
