"Newhaven Ferry Port is the closest port to London with Ferry links to France, and is ideally placed between the seaside resorts of Brighton and Eastbourne with quick and easy access to the rest of the UK" from http://www.newhavenportauthority.co.uk
Unfortunately, it seems the ferry crossing from Newhaven to Dieppe has been subsidised only by the French for the past 10 years and is no longer financially viable. The closing of this line would cost 500 jobs in Newhaven alone and the many users of this route would have to drive miles more to get to another port, potentially spend longer at sea and arrive further away from where they want to be on the other side, thus driving longer there too.
Not all of us can or want to fly from Gatwich to Charles de Gaulle, or go all the way to the other side of London to get a cheap flight. Many families in the south use this route to go and see family and friends on the other side, in the comfort of their car, often because it is easier when you have children. We do not want to drive to Dover or Portsmouth to do this. Closing Newhaven-Dieppe means that the trip could now take hours more.
And what about all the lorries who use the route to deliver goods around Brighton, Worthing and their surroundings ? Do we want them to come from further away, thus polluting more? In this day and age, are we not supposed to free the roads and go greener and greener?
I believe the best way from A to B is a straight line so please can we keep this line, spare 500 jobs and a bit of our planet ? Help us keep the crossing open between Newhaven and Dieppe. Instead of leaving all the sea traffic to Portsmouth and Dover, maybe it is time for Newhaven to make its voice heard before the south starts to feel a bit like a remote enclave. People need a line in between these two mega ports.
