Dr. Sharon I. Byrdsong recommended bonuses for teachers and staff in the amount of $2,500 due to a budget surplus (500 vacancies) for salaries. Norfolk Public Schools has been able to run effectively in absence of the 500 employees due to the hard work and dedication of its current employees. The surplus is $20 million, the cost of the bonuses for the staff that have continued to ensure that all students are transported, fed, educated, cared for, and supported is only $11 million dollars. NPS employees are more than deserving as recognized in the above letter written to the Members of the City of Norfolk School Board of Norfolk Virginia.
Dr. Byrdsong expressed great appreciation for NPS employees while recognizing the "strain employees have experienced" and recommend the provision of a "reward that underscores [their] appreciation."
