The Norfolk Island community is being asked by the Regional Council to accept an exorbitant 40% rise in rates and charges and a complete change in the rating system categories.  This amounts to some individuals and businesses incurring rises of up to 1500 %. Norfolk Island is not a wealthy community in monetary terms and cannot afford this. The wealth of Norfolk Island is in its beautiful vistas, pristine environment, friendly nature and strong community spirit. These rate rises will devastate our residents, their livelihoods and those things that are beautiful about Norfolk Island.
