January 30th, Norfolk County Council defeated the staff recommendation to take steps toward an integrated facility and possible locations for a all encompassing and accessible Community Hub facility inside Norfolk County. A thorough staff report came after a series of public meetings held by a specially appointed Committee of Council. The public opinion was overwhelmingly supportive of an integrated facility development to replace current and imminent future outdated buildings in Simcoe. This decision effectively shelves an integrated solution and leaves the citizens of Norfolk open to indefinitely pay for expensive ongoing band-aids to facilities already recognized as unsuitable. Modern facilities elsewhere in Ontario have proven less costly to operate and increase revenues, encourage more active and healthy lifestyles for all ages and abilities.  Norfolk County deserves better.

The ongoing lack of consensus by Council is at least disheartening but moreover very costly and we are the ones who will have to pay. We deserve good value for our tax-paying dollars! Sensible solutions already exist and opportunities to obtain support by other levels of government will be missed as a failure to act falls into limbo by this inaction. These needs are urgent and people are rightfully concerned. Our elected officials need to work toward solutions for our community and work toward consensus. Council’s actions effectively ignore staff research and recommendations. And the divisiveness within Council and the various Ombudsman investigations is an embarrassment that increasingly characterizes us as dysfunctional. This conduct has to end and correct the decisions or lack of decisions that leave us on the hook for huge payments with little to nothing to show. Poor decisions or no decisions will have massive negative repercussions on our quality of life now and in the long term future of Norfolk County.

We are calling on all concerned and responsible citizens to sign and circulate this petition to tell our Norfolk County Council to not spend tax dollars unnecessarily on decaying infrastructure that has already been deemed unsuitable and to focus on the solutions and a consensus which will deal with the tax dollars of each and every one of Norfolk citizens.

We need a County Council that reflects a progressive and shared vision as well as leadership that demonstrates the ability to work together for the advancement of the County as a whole, not just Ward by Ward.
