Domenico Lucano is the Mayor of a little village called Riace in Calabria, Italy. This man worked with UNHCR (UN Refugees Agency) and in the last 14 years he managed to do something really amazing and unique in this world. Riace was an abandoned village in 2004 and Domenico Lucano. When a boat with 300 Kurdish reached the shores of Riace because of the wind, Lucano started to receive immigrants, even if this first group ended up going to Germany. Back then Riace was already a ghost village. Domenico Lucano founded an association called "Città Futura" (City of the Future"). The aim of this association was giving a new chance of life to the immigrants and to the village all together. The idea of Domenico Lucano was to offer the abandoned houses and free electricity to the newcomers in return they learned Italian, they renewed the buildings and they started to make handcrafts. Due to a government integration program Domenico Lucano started to recruit new refugees that had passed through the Italian's detention system. Before that Riace had no life, no shops, no restaurants, no schools,no children. Nowadays Riace is an example of integration all over the world. Domenico Lucano fought against mafia, prejudices, racism, ignorance, lack of humanity and created a new world. In Riace, today, people that once were neglected and abandoned by other human beings and institutions are born again and so did Riace itself.
