From Horan School in Harlem (http://chn.ge/TgjLDj) to Ortiz School in Santa Fe, an alarming trend is emerging in the aftermath of the Newtown school shooting. School Principals and administrations across US schools are ignoring important issues like school safety, coordination with law enforcement, the mental health of their students, and the rights of parents in favor of executing their own lockdown drills. We should prepare our schools for security while acting with care so we don't needlessly traumatize students and their families with surprise drills. We should coordinate with teachers, trained professionals, mental health experts, and law enforcement. The first drill cannot be a surprise drill. First drills should be informative and should discuss the possibility of surprise drills and give everyone involved the right tools and knowledge to be safe. We should take extra care for schools that have kids with disabilities. Don't take the community out of community safety. Our kids deserve more.
