My local Coles supermarket has converted their store to now being fully self serve.  This literally happened overnight without any prior warning or knowledge.  Coles have now put the onus on their supposedly ‘valued customers’ at this store to now do, what used to be the job of the paid checkout operators, which is to load, operate the checkout and bag their groceries, saving Coles from having to pay staff to do this for them! 

I have written to Coles expressing my anger and disgust with their new and greedy grab at reducing staff numbers at the expense of their customers for no benefit whatsoever. 

 I am very concerned that this will expand to all Coles supermarkets and if not nipped in the bud now, it will be taken up by other supermarkets as time goes on.

While to date, self serve checkouts have had their place and may well cater to the needs of some; they are not for all, all of the time.  My aim is to obtain and forward to Coles as many signatures as can be gathered by others who also see this as yet another erosion of services and to appeal to Coles to reinstate an appropriate and adequate number of fully serviced checkouts to cater for those who may not be technically inclined; those who are fed up with the constant issues with self serve checkouts and the need to call the Coles staff member to fix the problem; busy parent/s doing a large family shop; or those who simply don’t have the time, nor the inclination to be doing the job of an unpaid checkout operator!
