No Taxes for MLS
0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!
We oppose spending our tax dollars to build an MLS stadium.
Mecklenburg County voters approved using property taxes to pay for bonds in 2008 to build a Greenway people of all ages can enjoy at no cost. Voters were told it would be used to build the system in the Parks and Recreation 10 Year Master Plan. The Plan updated in 2015 still does not include building a sports stadium for private use. Our parks and recreation facilities rank 97th out of 100 metro areas. Please use our Parks and Recreation bonds to build the Greenway system we approved.
We oppose the use of any county property taxes, including the "PAYGO" (Pay As You Go) funds to build this stadium. The current direction of the US Department of Education, US Congress, and NC General Assembly, all of whom play a role in funding CMS, make it clear this is not the time to spend $47.5 Million or more on an arena we cannot use, rent or tax. CMS is seeking a $1 Billion bond referendum this fall to meet facility needs. Like our Greenway, CMS was forced to delay many projects with the recession in 2008. Children need us to catch up. Please do not use our taxes for this project.
We also ask the Mayor and City Council of the City of Charlotte to oppose this project. The deal does not include transportation investment merely a study of needs. The City can expect to be pressured to reprioritize transportation projects in the Capital Improvement Plan further delaying projects already promised to people in other parts of the Charlotte. City services like affordable housing, public safety and transportation should come before an arena. After the protests in September 2016, the City committed $3 Million with $1 M each toward retraining programs, housing, and to investigate CMPD response in protests and civil unrest. Those are reasonable uses of our tax dollars. The Hotel/Motel Tax (est. $30 Million) is created specifically for projects like this. Job training, housing and other basic services have to compete for money in the budget process. Please do not make this project an off-budget priority for our tax dollars.
We do NOT oppose MLS. We oppose using our taxes to pay for it.
