Miranda Seidell started this petition to Rankin District #98 Tax Payers

If there is any year that these students & athletes need built up - this is the year!

We aren’t asking for a participation trophy, we are asking for equality. A fair and proper recognition of these athlete accomplishments in a year where the opportunity to compete at state was taken from them.

We originally presented our request at the Rankin District #98 school board meeting on April 26, 2021, for current athletes that broke a school record at the IESA Sectional on May 7 & 8, 2021, to be recognized for their accomplishment on the current boards in the gym. We suggested a caveat with an asterisk to note sectional meet/state qualifier in place of what they would have placed at state of allowed to compete. Due to Covid and the IESA, the state series was cancelled and our athletes competed at the highest level of competition available to them (an official IESA event.) The opportunity to compete at state was taken away from them, not because of a personal illness or injury but because of a global pandemic.

Our current boards in the gym have a header that reads: State Records.
The year is listed, athlete name, time/distance and what they placed at an IESA State Series.
These are records of our athletes that placed at an IESA State Series.
If you break a record currently on that board at any other event (including an IESA Sectional) during your track & field career, athletes will not be recognized for a school record that they now hold. Our school does not have a board with a header that reads School Records.

This topic was listed on the agenda as a discussion item.
15.III. Recognition of Accomplishments - Banners in Gymnasium - Track and Field 2021
Our request that I noted above was voted on at the school board meeting on April 26, 2021, which included six board members who could vote, and did vote. The seventh board member had resigned and could not cast a vote. No board members abstained from voting for possible personal interest. The board has stated that they could not come to a majority consensus, three members voted yes, three voted no. We were told that since they could not come to a majority consensus that our request was not approved. It was later noted that further discussion would occur for other possible ways to recognize the athletes but that this specific request was off the table.
Lack of a majority consensus does not result in an item of discussion being voted down or taken off the table.

Board of Education Protocol:
Voting Method
When a vote is taken upon any measure before the board with a quorum being present, a majority of the votes cast determines the outcome.

A consensus is not a majority vote.

A school board sets policies, goals and objectives for the district.
A superintendent manages the day to day operations of the district.
What makes a school board effective?
Knowing the difference between governance (which is its job) and management (which is the administration’s job).

Mission Statement In order to meet the needs of our students, our school strives to expect academic excellence and provide a caring environment in which all students can become lifelong learners; ENABLING STUDENTS TO SUCCEED IN OUR EVER-CHANGING WORLD.

We are asking that this request have a revote with full board member presence, or a revote with consideration for board members that have a possible personal conflict to abstain from voting (i.e. board members with children on the current record boards with records that stood to be beat or have been beaten at the IESA Sectional on May 7/8, 2021)

To add opinion, I do feel like our school should have a school records board as opposed to a state records board - possibly changing the header of the current board but still recognize state medalists in another way (as many local schools around here do.) But as far as the current boards go, I feel like we need to fight for the 2021 athletes, who won’t get this year back.
I do understand that not everyone agrees with what we asked for but to the kids, this was a tie. They don’t understand. They will see this is a process and will learn from it regardless of the outcome. Do not give up on something you believe in.
