Stop The Meals Tax Increase

I write today in strong opposition to a potential meals tax increase in Richmond.
A meals tax increase would impact those the most who can least afford it: working-class families and senior citizens. It will also make taxes on our city's food some of the highest in the nation, costing all city residents nearly $100 million over the next ten years.
An increased meals tax, already one of the highest in the country, would be severely damaging to the citizen owned small businesses that have helped revitalize Richmond, employ thousands of citizens and already contributes $33 million in addition tax revenue to the city.
Please explore other funding options and fix existing issues and inefficiencies, particularly within Richmond Public Schools and in the city administration, before looking to a meals tax increase.
I urge you to oppose this meals tax increase and would hope you vote "no" should the issue come before City Council.
