A GCSE text book ‘AQA GCSE sociology 9-1’ is in circulation which contains concerning stereotypes of African, Caribbean, Chinese and Indian families. It describes Caribbean fathers and husbands as ‘largely absent’ and families as ‘child-shifting’ the same book makes generalisations about Chinese families, suggesting women are servile to men in their families and states sub-Saharan African people do not live in single family units, and that women without children are replaceable. It also generalises about Indian families not all living under the same roof.

It is impossible to make assumptions about the family arrangements and behaviour of the combined populations of Africa, the Caribbean, China, India between them amounting to billions of people.

It is concerning to see that such materials are in circulation in our schools. Racial stereotypes should have no place in our classroom and our society.

Call on Damian Hinds MP, education minister for a full audit of educational materials in schools to ensure they do not propagate racial stereotypes, withdrawing those that do.
