No Phones ? No Way !

This 2022-2023 school year Shaw High School has introduced a new rule removing the privilege to carry cell phones during the school day. This is not only a dangerous but also unfair decision to make especially in today’s world. With mass shootings at an all time high as of 2022 (many of which have been school shootings) in majority of these instances a simple phone call is what has saved many lives. Worst case scenario, if this were to happen at Shaw High School this would not only put our lives at risk but our mental health as well.  

Leaving phones in lockers from the beginning to the end of the of the school day is unfair to us as young adults. A transition into high school is the start of our young adult lives where we begin to have responsibilities and lives outside of school. Our cell phones are what we use to stay updated, stay in contact with family members , younger siblings, or in some cases our own children. As adults of children and family yourselves you should understand the struggle as well.

Faculty may think they’re a distraction but as young adults many of us know the correct time use devices and when not to. Using the RED , YELLOW, AND GREEN light procedures that were placed for electronic usage  will limited the usage of cell phones in class until the appropriate time. From personal experience this was a great way to know when cell phones were allowed and when they were not. 

Some people enjoy lunch time for a chance to relax during the school day.  For some students this means using one air-pod in the cafeteria to calm their mind and give them that push to finish the rest of the day strong. Even before test teachers allow students a little time to study before beginning the assessment. Every student has their own study method , for some students this may be to listen to a little music to help them study. 

The removal of having cell phones during the school day could possibly due to the images that were posted last year on social media pages. Some of the most popular were ones of students sleeping, and of the unappetizing meals that were provided to us during lunch. Before these incidents occurred, students were able to use cell phones. After the images surfaced is when we were first given the “Loud Mouth” pizzas. Had the images never surfaced the internet we’d still be eating the same unappetizing meals. 

“Why not go to the vending machines then?” , you may ask. Unfortunately vending machines are not accessible during lunch, leaving our only option the cafeteria lunch provided. Often times we are also told there aren’t anymore bag lunches ( Cheese, Chips, Sub sandwich/PBJ) once again leaving hot lunches the only option. 

Regardless, punishing others for a few students decision is not right.
