Summary:
Montessori’s mission is to prepare children for a more peaceful, equitable world. But we cannot achieve that mission without preparing the adults in the room to recognize and dismantle bias. We call on all Montessori educator preparation programs and professional development providers to embed anti-bias/anti-racist education into their core training and certification requirements.

Body:
We, the undersigned, believe that peace and justice are inseparable — and that Montessori’s promise to nurture the potential of every child cannot be fulfilled if educators are unprepared to address bias, inequity, and systemic harm.

Montessori teacher preparation already centers the idea of the “prepared adult.” But too often, that preparation focuses on academic and environmental readiness while neglecting the essential work of equity and justice.

We call on all Montessori accreditation bodies (including MACTE, AMI, AMS), training centers, and professional development providers to:

Integrate anti-bias/anti-racist training into all teacher preparation programs — not as an optional add-on, but as a core, required component.

Ensure measurable outcomes that assess educators’ readiness to identify and respond to bias in themselves, their practice, and their systems.

Commit to ongoing development by embedding equity training into continuing education and recertification processes.

A Montessori education that ignores inequity is not aligned with Montessori’s vision for peace. Let us prepare every adult to see, name, and dismantle injustice — so that every child can thrive.
