Why this petition matters

St. Ann School is a small school in a quiet neighbourhood in Thunder Bay.  The streets adjacent to the school are straight thorofares from Neebing Rd to James st in which it’s easy for drivers to get distracted and pick up speed.  The streets are also on main bus routes in which people pass the city busses all the time and transport trucks have also been seen going down these streets.  Despite all of this, there are no cross walks, stop signs, or crossing guards to ensure the safety of kids getting to school.

I’ve emailed the city voicing my concern after my husband was involved in an accident on the corner of Georgina ave and Francis st.  I did not believe it was safe for my children to be expected to cross the same intersection where my car was written off.  I was astounded to find out that studies were done in 2015 and 2019 that showed that there wasn’t enough traffic to justify stop signs and not enough kids crossing the street to justify crossing guards.  I would think given these studies it would conclude that the safety of EVERY child matters and that safety standards should be the same at every school regardless of the student population volume and that less traffic would mean that a 4 way stop would not be a large impedance to traffic.  Also, a minor inconvenience to motorists should be a small price to pay when the safety of children as young as six is at stake.

I’ve seen other schools within the city that have 4 way stops or stop lights AND crossing guards whereas St Ann school has nothing.  Ideally I would prefer to see either 4 way stops or cross walks like they have on Needing Rd since these would be a more permanent solution but honestly anything is better than nothing.  The intersections of Georgina Ave and Mary st - Georgina Ave and Francis St - and Georgina Ave and Frederica St are the intersections of concern.

thank you for your attention

Very concerned parents
