The Issue

Petition to Enforce the Illinois TRUST Act, VOICES Act, and Way Forward Act

To: City Leaders, Mayors, City Councils, and Police Departments Across Illinois

We, the undersigned, call on our city and law enforcement leaders to fully uphold and enforce the protections established by the Illinois TRUST Act, the VOICES Act, and the Way Forward Act — laws created to protect immigrant communities from fear, discrimination, and unjust targeting.

Every resident should feel safe calling 911 — regardless of immigration status.

These laws limit the involvement of local law enforcement in federal immigration enforcement (ICE), require protections for immigrant survivors of crime, and mandate annual reporting to ensure agencies are following the law.

We urge all law enforcement agencies to:

  • Follow the Illinois Attorney General's guidance on immigrant rights and legal obligations
  • Submit their required reports under the Way Forward Act in a timely and transparent manner
  • Attend trainings to stay informed on legal responsibilities related to immigrant communities
  • Take corrective action where there is non-compliance, such as in the recent case of the Joliet, IL Police Department

We urge city officials to:

  • Publicly affirm their commitment to these protections
  • Ensure their departments are trained, compliant, and accountable
  • Promote community trust and safety — not fear

No one should be afraid to seek help in a moment of crisis.

Our communities are stronger and safer when everyone is protected and respected.

Sign below to demand full compliance and accountability — because justice should belong to all of us.
