Uniforms make no sense. The majority of students hate them, they’re relatively expensive, and limit any sense of individuality we have as people. The supposed reasoning behind us wearing them at BCC is to keep any non-city students/staff out of our building. We literally all have student and staff IDs, and our uniforms are free for anyone to purchase even if they aren’t affiliated with our school. It’s stupid (respectfully). If there is ever any debate about if someone is supposed to be inside the school, just look up their name or ask for their student/staff ID. It is really not that hard. The uniforms themselves are an issue. Not only are khakis not the best fashion statement, but for any afab students who start their menstrual cycle at school, it could be humiliating for them to be wearing light pants, with an obvious stain. The homogeneity caused by our uniforms could potentially be dehumanizing for students. Personal sense of style is really important for some people, whether it be because of ethnic background/culture, or just because their clothes make them happy. Just get rid of them, what’s the point.
