Why this petition matters

Started by Aaron Bouchey

Something has to change..

As a life long Islander, I personally have seen an alarming change in how fast and out of control the driving has been on Arch Street. After having discussions with other Islanders, it is way too common. From my personal experience, I lost my car in 2018 due to a drunk driver smashing it. At that time, my niece lost her vehicle as well, and my wife's car had over $4,000 in damages and costed us around $800.00 of our own money to fix. Most recently in May, my wife's new car was hit AGAIN and that one costed us over $1,000.00 (loaner and deductible) and had over $8,000 in damages.. Not too mention, 2 months in the shop! Vehicles hit the old tracks going over 30 and will go air born and lose control... Hence our cars getting hit facing west.

We work had for what we have and shouldn't have to spend our own money because there are no street cameras to catch these hit and runs.

This is truly out of hand and with school starting soon... It could get worse and put the kids at risk walking down the street.

What WE would like to see..

  • a NEW 25 PMH speed limit across The Village. If it stays at 30, people will go 35-40.. If we get it to 25, hopefully they only go 30. Whether we change the speed or not, MPH signs HAVE to be posted along the streets of a reminder. One sign on Cohoes Ave and Lower Hudson isn't enough. YOU SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GO THE SAME SPEED ON ARCH ST AS YOU CAN ON 787 BOULEVARD.
  • Also, WE want more traffic control at The Park and nights when there are Little League games. WE would like a sign up at The Park and on Cohoes AVE near the GILL that states "Slow down, children at play". I still can't believe that there isn't a sign up there. Maybe make it 15 MPH? As parents we have to have worry about enough.. We shouldn't have to worry about someone speeding past these locations. Kid's will be kid's.. Should they pay more attention and not be on their phones? ABSOLUTELY. But, we're on our phones too... They aren't thinking about getting hit by a car, they wanna have fun with their friends. We were kids once too! (on The Island)

I understand that things are difficult and there are many things going on that we don't know about. I get that... But, this is something that is so easy to fix (with signs) that could change so much and could potentially save something tragic from happening.
