Why this petition matters

Started by Erika Strode

Do you know how much federal funding goes to childhood cancer research? 4%. That's it! Organizations and families have to do fundraisers to raise money for research because our government is lacking terribly to provide for childhood cancer. You may think that your family will never be impacted by childhood cancer and I pray that you won't but unfortunately 46 children a day are diagnosed with cancer. I never thought one of my children would be battling cancer either but here we are. She is stage 3 Wilm's Tumor at four years old battling cancer when she should be playing with other kids, starting pre-k, taking her karate classes, and running around but she can't do any of those things because of her weakened immune system and the port in her chest. Did you know that the top 6 chemotherapy drugs to treat common childhood cancer were approved in the 50s, 60s, and early 70s? My daughter takes two of these. One she takes weekly and it was approved in 1963. Seriously! 1963 and we are in 2022. Because of the lack of funding for research, our children have no other choice but to take these medicines that cause dozens of side effects and a lot are long-lasting effects. 2/3 of childhood cancer patients will have long-lasting chronic conditions from the treatment they received. In 3 days Americans spend as much money on Starbucks as our government does on childhood cancer research in a year! That should be a shock to everyone! Not just people with children. Not just people with children facing cancer. We need to tell our government that our children deserve more than 4%! 4% for 12 major types of pediatric cancers with over 100 subtypes. 4% spread over all of those cancers. 4% to help our children survive. 4% for our children to live a normal life. We have to stand up and say no more 4 our kids need more!! Please sign this petition to show our government we won't stand for this number anymore. If we won't fight for the children, then who will?
