No Meters in Bay Shore

We who sign this petition are speaking with one voice in opposition to the proliferation of parking meters in the hamlet of Bay Shore and demand they be removed. This program is hurting businesses and residents.  Bay Shore is the only Hamlet with parking meters and the funds collected go to the town's general fund, not back to Bay Shore.

It began with the purchase of a parking system for over $700,000 championed by Councilman Cochrane and first implemented on Maple Avenue. Most community residents understood the reasoning for metered parking there as Fire Island travelers would fill the lot and board ferries for the day or even a weekend, making it difficult for restaurant patrons to find parking slips.

However, the Town Board pushed through this metered parking plan without listening to the concerns & input of the residents of Bay Shore. There are now meters on Main Street, on both north and south service roads behind Main Street, on the streets that run perpendicular to Main Street, in the LIRR parking lot, on the Maple Avenue Dock, at the Bay Shore Marina, and in the Benjamin’s Beach parking lot. There are NO Meters in any other hamlet and the Board voted down funding meters in Islip, except for their LIRR station.

For over 30 years the hamlet of Bay Shore suffered benign neglect from the town. Our Main Street was littered with shuttered businesses. Discharged mental patients, and a variety of other unfortunate souls roamed the sidewalks. The train station was in disrepair. The marina offered boat slips with plenty of parking with a deteriorated bulkhead and Benjamin’s Beach was a dirty little unfiltered cove.

It was not until the concerned residents of this hamlet joined together behind the Greater Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce and the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Summit Council, that we began to see these problems addressed. Our volunteers worked tirelessly for years to build this hamlet into the esteemed position it holds today. We’ve donated our time, our money and our talents all for the betterment of the Hamlet of Bay Shore only to see you Town of Islip officials come along to tax our success in the form of parking meters.
Bay Shore is not Islip Town’s cash cow. We are individuals, families and businesses that work hard, pay our taxes and strive to be the best we can be.
