No mask mandate at UND
No mask mandate at UND
Mask mandates are not effective in slowing the spread of COVID-19. The Office of the President installing a mask mandate at UND goes against science. Vaccine promotion is more effective than a mask mandate.
If you have the COVID-19 vaccine or natural immunity to COVID-19, you are essentially safe from COVID-19. Breakthrough infections resulting in fatality from COVID-19 are extremely rare. Over 161 million people have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in the US, of which approximately 6,000 people have been infected with “breakthrough” cases and 1,700 people have died as of July 30th, 2021. Chances of death if you have been vaccinated are 1/100,000.
The assumption that source control (in this case, universal masking) reduces the spread 40-60% derives from influenza contagion research but the Delta Variant spreads more easily than influenza. It is quite possible the source control could be much lower than 40% when masks are used. Masks are not as effective for slowing COVID-19 spread as vaccines.
According to the North Dakota Department of Health, Grand Forks County has had 80 covid deaths. 1 of which was in the age group of 15-19. 4 of which were in the age group of 20-29 since the beginning of the pandemic.
According to the CDC, the only age range at risk for severe symptoms, hospitalizations, and/or death, are ages 65+. The majority of the students and the working class are in the age range of 18-60, which is an extremely low-risk age group for any severe symptoms, hospitalizations, and/or deaths, especially when fully vaccinated.
UND must do everything possible to promote the vaccine, but installing a mask mandate goes against that goal. Vaccine hesitancy is only increased when the population is masked because it promotes the idea that the vaccine is ineffective at protecting individuals who come in contact with COVID-19. Vaccines work!
Here are some items UND can do besides a mask mandate from the CDC:
1. Improve the public understanding on breakthrough infections
2. Improve communication around individual risk among the vaccinated
3. Risk of disease or death reduced 10x fold or greater in vaccinated people
4. Risk of infection reduced 3x fold when fully vaccinated
UND should focus on students and faculty willing participating in getting vaccinated, and provide free antibody tests to anyone wanting to to determine their immunity, and collect the data of these categories to determine the herd immunity of our campus. This would be a science and data driven approach to determine if additional COVID-19 safety measures should be implemented.
