NO LONGER THIRSTY: Installation of Drinking Fountains in Public Schools

NO LONGER THIRSTY: Installation of Drinking Fountains in Public Schools
The Issue
Why Water Matters
The human body requires water for all major functions, including digestion, blood circulation, temperature regulation, and waste elimination.
Apart from hydration, clean water is also essential for basic hygiene, which prevents the spread of infectious diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and other related health concerns. In the Philippines alone, it is reported that waterborne illness remains one of the leading causes of death, with almost 50,000 reported cases annually, according to the Department of Health (DOH).
However, many students lack access to safe drinking water in schools. Without communal solutions like water stations or filtration systems, students are forced to bring their own, which:
- Creates financial burdens for low-income families
- Puts students at risk of drinking contaminated water
Water and Learning: The Connection
Hydration is directly linked to student success. Staying hydrated can deeply influence healthy physical growth, mental capability, and concentration - three key elements for optimal learning and performance.
Having drinking fountains installed in all public schools is not just a matter of ease but a necessity. With more than 23.8 million students attending public elementary and secondary schools, we must provide them with direct access to a key element of their health – fresh drinking water. Currently, only a portion of schools can offer this basic need.
The Solution: Install Drinking Fountains in Public Schools
- Ensures every student has access to clean and safe drinking water
- Reduces financial strain on families by eliminating the need to buy bottled water
- Encourages healthy hydration habits, leading to a healthier school community
Our Call to Action
We urge the Department of Education and local government units to grant funding for the installation and maintenance of drinking fountains in all public schools.
We call on parents, teachers, and students to support this initiative by signing this petition and fighting for our children's health, well-being, learning, and performance.
Let’s make clean water accessible to all students. Sign the petition today!
