To the Board of Trustees:

We are parents and guardians of students in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, and we strongly oppose the proposal to cap our teachers’ health care benefits.

This proposed cap on benefits would essentially result in a pay cut for our teachers at a time when the costs of living and of health care continue to increase. By effectively reducing salaries of the people who make up the backbone of our children’s long-term academic success, you are potentially driving away the teachers who are most invested in our children’s lives, and with whom our children have come to trust. Without a livable compensation package, our teachers will be forced to leave the District for areas in which they are more appropriately rewarded for their work. So many of our teachers work far beyond the hours required of them because our children are their children. In order to sustain a quality public school education, we need to retain our quality teachers.

The Board has recently agreed to assume the full health care costs of the assistant superintendent of HR in order to “have a successful recruitment effort,” and is now considering doing the same for all of the assistant superintendents. At the same time, you are proposing a cap on our teachers’ health care benefits which results in a pay reduction for years to come. This sends the message to our teachers and our community that our teachers are expendable. They are not. Our teachers deserve better.
