N Begay started this petition to NM PED and

1 in 26 will be diagnosed with epilepsy, including children aged 0-17.  In our state of New Mexico, 3,400 children have active epilepsy, not including children who will have a seizure without an epilepsy diagnosis. Parents send their children to school knowing teachers and other school personnel such as cafeteria, bus, security, administration, counselors, custodial, ancillary, and substitution staff will keep them safe. However, not all school personnel, including teachers, are provided training in seizure recognition and first aid. We need all of our children to be safe at school.

We’re calling to action legislation ensuring all school personnel in our New Mexico schools are provided seizure recognition and first aid training because we know not all seizures look the same however, first aid is the same for all seizures. The Epilepsy Foundation offers a free seizure first aid training video for school personnel. Seven states successfully passed seizure smart legislation and more are in the process. We are asking for your support to bring an introduction of, Nizhoni & Athena Purple Warriors Proposal for Seizure Smart Schools legislation  in New Mexico.

We the undersigned, are concerned voting citizens who urge our leaders to act now in supporting Nizhoni & Athena Purple Warriors Proposal for seizure smart schools legislation in New Mexico.  A proposal for legislation ensuring all school personnel with daily contact of children to participate in seizure recognition and first aid training.
