The beautiful and serene path along Abbott Blvd in Fort Lee offers a great spot for pedestrians (many with small children and pets) and bikers to enjoy a peaceful walk, jog or ride, without the bustle of city traffic on neighboring streets. I've been a resident in the community for over 13 years, and have seen a lot of regulars using that path daily.

Unfortunately, crossing the street at the Abbott Blvd and Central Blvd (Rt 5) intersection has become precarious. I witness many people (some with children and strollers!) attempt to cross the street and try to get the attention of drivers who rarely reduce their speed to yield to the pedestrians. It is a challenge crossing that street and alerting the drivers to slow down. It’s especially dangerous at night, when there is little lighting and poor visibility.

I firmly believe it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured. We need a solution - now! - to make the intersection safer for pedestrians (and bikers).

Potential solutions:

  • Pedestrian cross walk
  • Pedestrian cross walk (with a crossing guard to ensure compliance)
  • Stop sign on both sides of the road (same as on all the other streets along Abbott)
  • Yield sign on both sides of the road
  • Speed bump on both sides of the road, causing the cars to reduce speed
  • Flashing yellow traffic light
  • Overpass -- allowing traffic to flow at speed, while pedestrians can safely cross the street

I've submitted a complaint to NJ DOT. I was told there may be a plan for a cross walk in the works, but the timeline is not confirmed. Please sign & express your concern in the comments section of the petition to help expedite this issue so that we may achieve a prompt resolution and make our community safer for those that enjoy that path. Thank you!
