On the 22nd of March, India went into a state of total lockdown in the fight against Covid19. In the days that followed, The Ministry of Finance announced relief measures to many sections of the country – the organized sector and the rural population. Corporate organizations, farmers, agriculturists, those below the poverty line, daily wage workers, construction laborers as well as rural women have received respite through allocated relief packages. However, women entrepreneurs who add to the economy but do not come under any of these categories seem to have fallen through the cracks and are struggling as a forgotten segment of the economy. We are a significant population. What about us?

Women entrepreneurs like myself, largely freelancers, offer our services and products to various segments of the economy. Our businesses are predominantly bootstrapped. Many of us are single income generators with children and parents dependent on us for their daily needs – including food, home and basic necessities. With the lockdown, our income has come to a standstill. The utilities – phone, internet, rent, maintenance and electricity bills still accrue regardless.

Unfortunately, the PDS that is available to needy citizens, is not easily available to middle class women entrepreneurs. As families dependent on singular income, it is not easy to raise & sustain basic needs without an income and our vulnerability in this crisis seems to be unseen.

The mental stress of ensuring income towards basic lifestyle and security is taking a toll not just on us women, but also our families who are dependent on our income. In the face of this crisis, to constantly receive messages from service providers about nearing due dates with near-nil income is debilitating and highly stressful. The impact is adverse.

Women entrepreneurs and business owners should be supported during this crisis to ensure they survive and help the economy bounce back. I believe that the Hon. Finance Minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, & the Minister for Women & Child Development, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani, have the ability to address and influence this immediately.

  1. Electricity, water bills, telephone bills, internet bills, rent and maintenance bills should be given 90 days of relaxation for making payment for a period up to 30th September 2020.
  2. Income tax & GST refunds should be processed faster.
  3. A government led social security system for registered women-led businesses to push a monthly sustainability relief package as the need of the hour.

While we stand in solidarity & support in the government's fight against Covid19, we seek your support for this urgent intervention to help ensure India’s women-led entrepreneurship to survives this crisis and emerge as a pillar of growth and innovation to help drive India’s recovery.
