Himanshu Mehta started this petition to Nirmala Sitharaman (Defense Minister of India)

The physically-challenged face insurmountable obstacles in a country like India. Not only do they need to spend more on daily living but are also faced with equipment costs, medical supplies' costs, chronic health problems, frequent hospitalizations, loss of wages on account of unpaid leave, job-loss, early-retirement, travel and professional care-giving/nursing costs etc.

Caregivers (within the family) face their own physical, emotional, financial struggles, often alone. They too can face the same issues as the ones faced by those they care for. Additionally, if parents to a physically-challenged offspring, they need to make allowances for future needs of the offspring, in addition to their own.

Pertinent to note here that insurers, especially health insurers, refuse to insure the physically-challenged and there is little by way of a government mandated social security.

Deductions presently allowed are just not sufficient and there is a need to look sympathetically and holistically at the issue. Exempting the physically-challenged and their caregivers (parents, siblings, spouse) would hardly make much of a dent in the government exchequer.
