With the recent gold import duties implemented by the Indian Government, NRIs face difficulties in bringing gold over 40 grams into India for temporary purposes. More specifically, in scenarios such as attending Indian weddings and festivals, it is customary to wear gold jewelry. Although with this import restriction in place, NRIs cannot additional gold jewelry as only a pair bangles, mangalsutra, and earrings will measure more than 40 grams.

Thus, a solution must be implemented to allow NRIs to bring jewelry for temporary visits. When Indian residents travel outside of India, they use an export certificate to declare their jewelry/expensive items. These same items can then be brought back into the country without any custom taxes. To mitigate the problem faced by NRIs, we request the Indian Government to consider creating a form similar to the export certificate so NRIs can bring more jewelry into the country during their temporary visits. This will help NRIs participate in Indian festivities thoroughly.
