Concerned Citizen started this petition to Nine Network

Loud and clear for those in the back!

This isn't the first petition about the show and it likely won't be the last. And unless you listen to the public and take action, petitions and signatures will keep appearing.

The Nine Network has created the perfect outrage machine: Married at First Sight. Well, I for one, have had enough. Seeing Billy reduced to tears on national television was the last straw before I decided perhaps someone should speak up. AGAIN.

The problem

Toxic and abusive relationships are being aired on national television. Where is the duty of care to the contestants? It's all well and good to say to the media, "Oh, we have psychologists and we have staff on hand to support the contestants, and if they don't want to use them, boo f*cking hoo." It's not good enough. They should not have been placed in this situation to begin with. The "experts" put these people together on purpose, knowing enough about them to do so, for what? For drama? For ratings? It is not for people to find love, we can see that much!

Who is affected by this show?

First of all, the people who signed up. The ones who are paired with abusive, narcissistic and downright nasty people. We have seen gas lighting, verbal abuse, and while we can point the blame squarely at the perpetrators (you know who you are), the Nine Network must also be brought to account. You see everything and you know how it looks to your viewers, and you still air this garbage fire. In turn, viewers are affected. Many of whom have endured and left relationships like these. You might enjoy the ratings and the drama, but some of us are having flashbacks of people close to us screaming at us over things that shouldn't matter. Things like Splenda and when we last went surfing.

Why do I care?

I have witnessed it personally as a child growing up, I have seen the bruises on my sister's skin, I have seen friends withdraw as everything becomes about appeasing their partners. We have White Ribbon Day and we have discussions and we always talk about how we don't condone abuse, either against a woman or a man and yet, this painful social experiment continues. Sure, it might even be staged, but it looks too uncomfortably real.

What do we want?

We want people to find what they're actually seeking when they go on this show. If it's love, then honour that. That's your premise, isn't it? So deliver. Otherwise, stop putting people together who aren't good for each other. Stop doing nothing while people are gaslit and screamed at over nothing. That's abuse and we want it to stop. Even if the experts aren't privy to everything that's going on, the producers are and the ball is in their court now to do something about it. We are not amused by this display. It is distressing and it must end. Don't go to the media and say that it's not what we think. Don't lie to us because we know. We're seeing it.

Do the right thing and end the experiment.
