Reinforce SEX ED in schools until year 13

We are a group of six year 13 Social Studies students from Palmerston North Girls’ High School in New Zealand and we have been investigating existing Sexuality Education policy in New Zealand, specifically concerning the 1989 Education Act. This Act states that it is compulsory to teach Sexuality Education in schools from years 1-10. While we support this, we believe that students would benefit from being taught Sexuality Education beyond year 10.

The current policy enables youth to develop a valuable base knowledge of sexuality, but after evaluating anecdotal and statistical evidence we have made some conclusions. We found that by the time many students reach year 13, they have forgotten much of the content they were taught from years 1-10. From our investigation, we also concluded that the content becomes increasingly relevant to the majority of students in the latter years of high school. We also found that the maturity of the individual at the time they are being taught SEX ED affects both their attitude towards learning and the understanding the develop of this topic. We therefore believe that by reinforcing the current curriculum until year 13, students would be more likely develop deeper understandings of the topic and would also be more likely to retain this invaluable knowledge.

We propose that the 1989 Education Act be amended to make Sexuality Education compulsory to be taught in schools from years 1-13.
