The Fight for Women's Rights in the Middle East

Dear Mrs. Haley,                                                                                            12/17/17

We are Zoe and Nina and we go to Sedgwick Middle School in CT. We are researching women's rights in the Middle East for our social studies project. We see how extremely hard it is for women to have rights and we think it's critical that something needs to change and we want to help. For example, did you know that according to a United Nations survey from 2013 99% of women from Egypt had faced sexual harassment and 91% of people felt unsafe on the streets? Also, according to the Cultural Survival website, women in the Middle East were legally required to be obedient to their husbands and if they disobeyed (such as leaving the house without the husband's blessing), the men could legally beat them, suspend all forms of payment and could get police and have her forcibly returned to her house. These are just some examples of the unjust world that women in the Middle East live in and this sets a bad example for the rest of the world. Something needs to be done and we think that our petition can convince you to try and push this topic with any Middle Eastern country. We hope that you will take this into consideration when choosing different matters that need attention and change. We know that you are the right person for this because you are USA's representative at the United Nations and we believe you can help.

Thank you very much for your time,

                                                                Nina and Zoe
