A Shakespeare play was performed at Mitchell High School recently to which some pastors and parents found unethical because, as you are aware, Shakespeare plays have scenes of drinking from a flask, suicide (Romeo & Juliet), and a brief kiss by two males actors. Shakespeare is a form of Art which should not be ridiculed and censored for it's reality of life. These "concerned parents and pastors" (homophobes) are now trying to ban T.R.A.C (Toe Rivers Art Council) from performing such plays at the High School because they were offended by the play. LGB youth seriously contemplate suicide at almost three times the rate of heterosexual youth because of discrimination and bullying. The real issue here is they wish to discriminate against our LGBT community and our local Art Council because it doesn't line up with their beliefs. Let's show them that we can not and will not tolerate hate,it is wrong.

The T.R.A.C mission is as follows:

"Since 1976, the Toe River Arts has been working to connect the arts and the community. The Council is dedicated to enhancing the lives of the people who live in this region through arts-related experiences and education. We are proud of our work in the schools, with the artists, for our residents and for those who may just be passing through. Studies show that we learn through hands-on enterprises, whether in school or out, 8 or 80. Toe River Arts creates realities out of those possibilities."

Please sign and share this petition to help our Arts Council. Thank you.

"Theatre will always have elements of culture and history that will conflict with some of any community’s values. Those people have the right not to attend. They do not have the right to prevent all others from attending.

They have the right to tell their own children they may not perform or attend performances; they do not have the right to prevent others from having the opportunity to perform or attend. By tying the hands of TRAC, they severely limit students’ opportunities to grow and express themselves in the arts." -TRAC supporter
