Help us clean up the oil spills in the Niger Delta!

Oil spills are destroying the environment and the lives of those who live in the Niger Delta.
The pollution of soil and water has devastated farming and fishing for decades, and many have lost their livelihoods as a result. The impact on health has also been severe, with recent research suggesting that oil spills may have contributed to increased infant mortality.
As environmental NGOs that work with local communities in the region, we are launching this petition to try and stop the damage. The changes we are asking for will help prevent future oil spills – and clean them up if they do take place – but we need your help.
Why do we want you to sign the petition and help #CleanTheDelta?
Current Nigerian legislation does not do enough to protect the environment from oil spills. However, there is a real opportunity to change this. The Nigerian National Assembly is currently drafting two crucial bills – the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) Amendment Bill, and the Petroleum Industry Governance (PIG) Bill.
We hope that in 2018, the National Assembly will vote on whether to pass these two bills into law. If approved, they will change the legal environment, improving the way oil spills are dealt with in the Niger Delta.
We are engaging with the Federal Government of Nigeria to develop these and other reforms, including making the Ministry of Environment solely responsible for environmental controls in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.
Help us change how the industry is regulated, by persuading the National Assembly to do more to protect the Niger Delta, its people and the environment. Signing our petition will ensure the National Assembly understands the impact of oil spills – and helps stop them.
Yes! I want to help clean the Delta! I want the Nigerian National Assembly to:
- Pass the NOSDRA Amendment Bill. This will help empower NOSDRA to implement efficient prevention and response strategies to oil pollution. This will also help ensure that the oil industry complies with Nigerian environmental regulation.
- Make the Ministry of Environment and its agencies the sole body responsible for environmental regulation in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria. Doing so would remove this responsibility from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, which currently has a mandate to maximise oil production as well as look after the environment.
- Review and pass the PIG Bill so that it mandates an independent environmental regulator domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Environment.
