Hold Private Boarding Schools in Nigeria Accountable
Sylvester Oromoni, a 12 year old Jss2(8th grade) student of a private school called Dowen College Lekki Lagos Nigeria was murdered by his school mates on December 1, 2021.
It was reported that the 12 year old was asked to join a cult and because of his refusal, he was forced to drink some kind of “chemical” and three of his classmates best him up and “stomped” on him breaking his waist and causing serious internal damages. The school called his parent first instead of taking him to the emergency room. There were no CCTVs or other cameras to show what happened rather, the school was quick to release a public announcement that Sylvester was injured while playing football. They refused to take responsibility and the students Sylvester mentioned before he passed were picked up early the next day from school by their parents with their current whereabouts unknown.
The authority of the Dowen College Lekki need be held accountable for this and private especially private boarding schools be more regulated by the government. The government need to make sure less private schools are being opened focusing more on the schools already running.
In Lagos Nigeria alone, the number of private schools are 18,500.
