Working mothers in Nigeria should get 6 months maternity leave with full pay!

0 have signed. Let’s get to 15,000!

I started this when in less than 2 hours, I have answered on Ask The Paediatricians Facebook Group 2 questions from mothers who want to know how to care for their babies as they  resume work soon. Their babies are just 5 and 7 weeks old. This is so bad.

Mothers need sufficient time to heal after the stress of child birth and also to exclusively breastfeed their babies for 6 months with all the attendant benefits not only for the children but for the family and the nation.

So many children falling ill and dying in Nigeria because they are not exclusively breastfed and cared for! Why? Their mothers have to go back to work too early and unable to care for the children properly.

So many private organisations give just 4 - 6 weeks maternity leave. Some even sack the staff immediately they have a baby. Their crime is becoming a new mother.

We as a Nation MUST invest in the health of our mothers and the children who are our future. They guarantee the continuity of our nations.

It should be a law for all employers of labour to allow mothers in their employment to have minimum of 6 months maternity leave with full pay. They should have the option of even doing the next 6 months on half pay and their jobs should be guaranteed while they care for their babies!

Lagos and Kaduna States have already implemented this. We need it to be implemented at the Federal and all states. We most especially need all private employers of labour to do this. It should be mandatory for them

Let's sign and share till this is achieved!

Thank you!
