Centre for Health Ethics Law and Development (CHELD) started this petition to Nigeria law makers and Government
According to Section 327 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38, L.F.N 2004, any person who attempts to kill himself is guilty of a misdemeanor and is liable to imprisonment for one year.
This provision makes attempting suicide a crime. We are of the opinion that a person who has harbored suicidal thoughts, gotten to the point of execution and failed at it should not be punished. Instead, such a person should have access to mental health care facilities and services.
Help us change the law. Sign this petition to ensure the decriminalization of attempted suicide in Nigeria.
