Hear from Raystede's Founder: Miss M Raymonde-Hawkins MBE
Jul 28, 2017 — It's been a year since we started this petition and still we have heard nothing from Raystede. No response whatsoever. If Nigel Mason has nothing to say perhaps that's because he has no say in the matter. We know that he is actually a vegetarian himself, so why would he support this policy of selling meat and other products of animal exploitation in Raystede's cafe? Since we've not heard from him we can only speculate. But someone has made this decision relatively recently because it wouldn't have happened in Miss M Raymonde-Hawkins day. She died in 1998.
Miss M Raymonde-Hawkins MBE, Raystede's founder, established it as a charity in 1952 but she had been rescuing animals since childhood. She cared deeply for all animals and was opposed to all forms of animal exploitation. In her book 'Sensible Pets and Silly People' she wrote
"My own view, and that of every decent minded person, is that no animal should be caused to suffer at all for any reason."
She was of course a committed vegn and ran Raystede strictly on those principles. She believed that the only way to save animals from exploitation in the future was through education of the young, those not too set in their ways. She personally did many school talks and dedicated her life to demonstrating a better, kinder way to live. There was no hypocrisy in her or the way she ran her organisation.
A couple of Christmases ago, at the Raystede volunteers' Christmas booze up, one volunteer was overheard commenting disapprovingly on another volunteer's leather handbag. She said "Ooh, you wouldn't have gotten away with that a few years ago. People used to be frowned at if they brought a ham sandwich to work." Clearly Raystede management didn't used to be so confused about their duties towards all animals.
So who made the decision to betray Miss Raymond-Hawkins' life's work? Let's start with the trustees - maybe they have some influence. Please write to one or more, or all if you can, of the following trustees and politely urge them to respect Miss Raymond-Hawkins' legacy, and run the sanctuary as she did - for ALL animals - by making the cafe fully vegan. Thank you.
