Apologise for supporting Donald Trump

Following Donald Trump's failure to condemn fascism, we call on Nigel Evans MP, to apologise for his earlier support for Trump.

In February 2017, Nigel Evans, MP for the Ribble Valley, spoke in support of Donald Trump's state visit to the UK. In fact, so keen was Evans to express his support that his Christmas card to constituents contained a photo of him with Trump. (By comparison, most MPs ask local school children to design them).

Despite Trump's leadership of the "birther movement", refusal to disavow the Ku Klux Klan and multiple other acts which indicate his racism, Nigel Evans declared he had seen "no evidence" that Donald Trump was racist. In doing so, and consistently speaking in support of Trump, he ignored warning signs and demonstrated an appalling lack of judgement.

Initially, Trump said there had been "hatred, bigotry and violence, on many sides". He later called racist groups criminals, but went back on those comments saying that there were "fine people on both sides". His failure to condemn the neo-Nazi gathering in Charlottesville has demonstrated either, that he has racist tendencies of his own, or he is too weak to condemn such people.

For context, one of those sides carries swastikas, talked openly of establishing fascism and said "Jews will not replace us". These people were not defenders of free speech, they were neo-Nazis. A former KKK leader praised Trump for not condemning them.

Mr Evans, your support for Donald Trump has not been subtle. Even fellow Republicans like Mitt Romney and Marco Rubio have spoken against Trump. Considering the warning signs, you demonstrated an appalling lack of judgement by supporting Donald Trump. Your silence on this matter shames you.

Our ancestors spent six long years fighting Nazidom. I ask you to honour their memory and publicly condemn Mr Trump for his weakness against hatred and bigotry.
