If you've been in the Novi school district for at least Novi Meadows, you have probably experienced field day. If not, field day is an annual activity held around the last week of school. Games ranging from tug of war to sack races are played. The winning teams earn delicious treats such as popsicles and ice cream. After 6th grade, field day stops becoming an activity that students partake in. Although the high school does provide sports and gym classes, there are ways to avoid them. If the school wants to promote physical fitness, a pragmatic way to execute this would be to include field day as an end-of-the-year activity.

With school lasting around 7 hours, A profuse amount of time is spent sitting down. According to the Mayo Clinic, "Research has linked sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns. They include obesity and a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels..." By forcing students to stay seated for the bulk of the day, teens could be at risk for these chronic diseases. Not only does gym class help fight against the health complications due to the consequences of sitting, but field day will also help put fitness in a more positive light. With the use of games, teens can bond with each other and learn to work together, all while having fun.

To help make field day possible at the Novi High school, we could have a fundraiser of some sort (ie. bake sale) to get a reasonable budget for the activities.

TLDR: By depriving teens at the Novi High School of the exercise they need, we are putting them at risk for chronic diseases. A good solution would be to include a field day.
