PSVAR legislation rethink!
PSVAR legislation rethink!
Why this petition matters
The PSVAR legislation will put many small coach operators out of business where wheelchair accessibility isn’t even required for many many contracts! Private schools hire coach operators which suit their requirements, ie if they don’t require wheelchair access they don’t need to request this. Certain locations mean that wheelchair users would be unable to use any coaches, whether PSVAR compliant or not, due to pick up locations being in confined grass verge areas or positions where there is in fact no access for anyone with a disability. Specialised vehicles are therefore already in place to take wheelchair users to their schools in these scenarios. Why put an untold amount of companies out of business due to the extensive conversion costs involved to achieve PSVAR compliance when the home to school runs which a lot of companies have been providing transport for, and for many many decades for their particular schools, do not need wheelchair accessibility? Surely this legislation needs to be in force where it is actually required? This petition is to ask for support for the powers that be to reconsider the situation more thoroughly and to make the requirement on an “if required by school” basis. Many schools make their own decisions (ie not controlled by local councils) re coach operators based on what they need and reliability of service. Yes, wheelchair access is of course important - where it is actually required - but this isn’t everywhere. Please support this petition so that things can logistically be thought through properly!
