MPs to vote on Monday to recognise Palestine: please make sure your MP is there to vote!
Oct 9, 2014 — On Monday morning, 13th October, MPs will get the chance for the first time in years to debate and vote to recognise Palestine as a state. The cross party supported motion is “That this House believes that the Government should recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel.”
Unfortunately the debate is timed for the first morning of the new Parliament. Its not a good slot! Although the vast majority of MPs are sympathetic, they do please need all the encouragement we can give to make sure they turn up on time... Please could you all email your MP and let them know how strongly you feel about this.
Palestine Solidarity Campaign have designed a quick and easy way to contact your MP to remind them to turn up and vote in support of the motion. If you haven’t already contacted your MP, please do so viahttp://act.palestinecampaign.org/lobby/Palestine.
#HospitalShip2Gaza Many of you will have seen that the ship has sailed. But not to Gaza, to Sierra Leone to help with the Ebola crisis. Whilst we are glad that she is actually being used for something useful for a change, it does not take away the need for humanitarian support in Gaza. With winter approaching things are looking bleak. With the ground, aquifers and sea polluted with sewage, winter flooding is likely to take on another dimension... compounded by makeshift tents, debilitating injuries and the continuing blockade. Labour Friends of Palestine & the Middle East and the network of Palestinian NGOs with whom they are working, are committed to help us get this campaign to 100,000 signatures. The focus at the moment is on Monday's vote. After that the focus will be on this campaign & getting a second debate in Parliament about the situation in Gaza.
Yes Argus might have sailed. But there are plenty of other ships. And there are plenty of other ways to provide effective relief in Gaza, if the political will is there. So please watch this space next week for details of a renewed surge in this campaign. It might have sailed, but its not dead in the water!
Thank you everyone for your continuing support, its really appreciated. Hopefully we can put pressure on the UK Government to really act and make a difference in Gaza before winter really sets in.
Veronica & Chris
