Restoration of gun rights for felons

0 have signed. Let’s get to 100!

Everyone makes mistakes in life, I certainly have made my share of mistakes. That being said, because of my criminal past which is now more than a decade ago should I be punished forever? Am I worth less than any other human being? Do I not have the same right to protect myself, my family and my property the same as anyone else? I am asking the leaders of the Rhode Island government to uphold the words of the 2nd amendment and to protect my rights as a citizen, tax payer, and voter here in the State of Rhode Island. It is not right that felons must undergo a lifelong ban on firearms. People make mistakes and people also learn from their mistakes and correct their bad behaviors. I am asking our State leaders to pass new legislation for a process of restoring one's right to keep firearms for the purpose of self defense in the home, so that we may protect ourselves, our personal property, and our families. Does anyone really believe that keeping a firearm out of the hands of a convicted felon who has been out of trouble for a period of 10 or more years keeps our society any safer? I do not believe that this is true. Does anyone believe that a person with nefarious intentions won't aquire an illegal firearm to commit an act of violence? People change and people are deserving of a second chance. I think that it's time we give people that second chance. Stop treating our citizens who are voters and tax payers as second class citizens. So I'm asking my state officials to keep true to these words.

(A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.)
