PUMPS TO BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL TYPE 1 DIABETICS
There are approximately a quarter of a million with Type 1diabetes and only 29,000 of these are still children. Currently, only children under 12 could be entitled to a NHS pump and children over 12 have to fulfil a ridiculous criteria. Children are having to monitor their carbs, their blood sugars and inject themselves multiple times a day! If they play sport, they have to monitor before, during and after and take any appropriate action that may be required. They could have a pump that automatically monitors their levels and the pump only needs attending to approximately every 3 days. Privately, which currently is the only way forward, costs approximately £160 per month including consumables. We are not asking for mega bucks here, we are asking for investment in our children who have, through no fault of their own, a lifelong chronic disease. There are millions of adults with Type 2 diabetes who are exempt from paying for their prescription. How much is that costing the NHS? We provide aid to other countries but we are letting our children down. YES, thankfully it doesn’t affect many children, but why then are are letting these 29,000 children down. They are our future, please help to get this NICE Guidance changed. Our children should be our priority.
